Littleton Public Schools (LPS) is a premier school district located a few miles south of downtown Denver. Its slogan, “Big enough to serve you; small enough to know you” is an accurate portrayal of the district’s culture. With a longstanding tradition of excellence, LPS is the only school district in the Denver metro area to receive the Colorado Department of Education’s (CDE) highest accreditation rating Accredited with Distinction five years in a row. Additionally, with a tradition of close community ties, LPS has passed every election brought to voters throughout its history.
Littleton Public Schools serves 28 square miles and includes the majority of the city of Littleton, the town of Columbine Valley and portions of the municipalities of Bow Mar, Centennial, Greenwood Village and Englewood.
With about 15,300 students, LPS offers a comprehensive education from preschool through Grade 12. The district remains committed to keeping class sizes at a level where children can receive personal attention. Students attend 13 elementary schools, four middle schools, three high schools, several alternative programs, preschools and two charter schools.
Offering National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence and a high school International Baccalaureate program, LPS is the preferred choice for thousands of students in the area. More than 20 percent of its students live outside district boundaries and choose to open-enroll at LPS schools.
Consistently scoring among the top of all students from across the metro area on state assessment tests, LPS is the only school district in the metro area to receive the Colorado Department of Education’s prestigious “Accredited with Distinction” rating for five years in a row. LPS schools annually receive John Irwin School of Excellence and Governor’s Distinguished Improvement awards. LPS also received the ELPA Excellence Award—a new award created as part of the 2014 Bill amending the English Language Proficiency act.
All three high schools are nationally recognized and have been featured in Newsweek’s “Top High Schools in America” and 5280’s “Best High Schools.” LPS high schools boast regional and state champions in athletics, academics, STEM and performing arts. About 90 percent of its graduates indicate that they are college-bound and earn about $52 million annually in college scholarships. Such success in high school is possible because of the strong academic foundation built over time in LPS’ elementary and middle schools.
Leading the country in 21st century learning, LPS has more than 20,000 computers, laptops and Chromebooks that are used by students and staff every day. District teachers are known internationally for their use of instructional technology and students consistently win state and national competitions in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).
Littleton Public Schools offers preschool as well as half-day and full-day kindergarten options, including some full-day kindergarten options that are free. All elementary schools offer before- and after-school childcare and summer childcare.
“A Destination District” for students and staff, LPS teachers are caring professionals who devote their time and talent to helping each and every student achieve to his or her highest potential. LPS teachers average 11 years of experience and 77 percent have a masters degree or above.
A major strength of LPS is the commitment and involvement of its staff and community. Schools have business partners in addition to the parent and community members who volunteer about 180,000 hours each year.
LPS’ Finance Department has received the Distinguished Budget Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) annually since 1993. LPS has also received the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting from GFOA and the Association of School Business Officials annually since the 2001-2002 school year.
LPS is ranked in the top 20 in the nation in K–12 education for safety and security. The security industry’s leading trade publication, Security Magazine, has named LPS among the Top 500 security operations in the world. Additionally, the district received the Pinnacle of Achievement Award in Safety and Security Management.
